The promise of effortlessly losing weight is very seductive and it’s as uncomplicated as following a formula of ‘only bananas before lunch’ or ‘eat two eggs every day. When you learn about one of these new fad diets it’s only natural to think that it will be the way to losing the weight easily. Now maybe you’ve attempted a fad diet before and not had the results, but somehow it’s very enticing to try the next new one - it could prove to be successful.

First let’s look at why they don’t work.

In order to lose weight through a proven method, there are usually many instructions in exactly what you have to do. The one thing fad diets all have that’s the same, however, is a ‘gimmick’.

Recently there was a popular ‘banana diet’. The fact that this diet instructed people to only eat bananas for breakfast is its gimmick. For most people eating just fruit for breakfast is just not large enough. The number of people who would not get get very tired of bananas after having them every day for a week or two would be very few indeed!

The gimmicks these diets have drastically restricts the calorie intake which is why they don’t work. This can greatly slow the metabolism which causes muscle loss rather than fat loss.

Generally the reason why these diets don’t work is because they’re more interested in having an focus-grabbing gimmick than in actual structure and advice. Transforming the body and/or weight loss is not a complex thing to do, but then it’s not simple either. The fad diets make it look uncomplicated, sadly they don’t have the long-term results.

Why do they survive if they don’t work?

Selling a product is the main reason why fad diets exist. Fad diets are really fairly simple to create and people can generate a lot of money from them.

The fact that it seems easy to follow one of these diets is what appeals to the vast majority of those who are needing to lose weight. We lie to ourselves and believe that if we follow a simple formula we will lose the weight.  It’s just a way of avoiding doing something hard.
